The right approach for positive parenting

Raising a child is certainly not a child’s play. The thought of being responsible for the well-being of another person is itself quite overwhelming. Parenting is certainly a positive experience both for you and your child. Here are some tips which can make you familiar with the right approach for positive parenting.

Positive parental response

The first rule of positive parenting states that you should not say “no” straightaway to your kid. You should be clever enough in saying that but with a positive note. For instance, if your kid wishes to stay awake with you till late at night, do not object directly. Instead, say that you will spend a major part of your time with him or her the following morning when he gets up. That way, your kid will never feel that you were trying to avoid the company of the child. Rather, the child will respect your views and wait for the next day.

Avoid discouragement

Most of the parents have a tendency to discourage their children and force them to do what they want. If you do this repeatedly, it can be detrimental because this can make your kid feel that you do not identify with their pleasures or do not appreciate what they do. Instead, positive parenting says that you must let your kid enjoy his or her own time with pleasure. Do not object your kid every time he or she plays or watches cartoons on the television. Encouraging sometimes will act magically. Your kid will listen to you when you really want him or her to quit playing or watching T.V and will start studying.

Kid parent friendship

The fundamental criterion of positive parenting is that you must be your kid’s best friend. Encourage regular communication with your kid. Talk to your kid, listen to what he or she wants to say and lend a hand, whenever your kid requires your support. This healthy interaction develops a feeling of oneness between you and your kid. Instead of brooding silently or taking up addiction to vent out frustration, kids can overcome depression and stress when they interact healthily with their parents.

Encourage healthy lifestyle

The greatest benefit of positive parenting is that your kid will willingly follow your footsteps. Kids subjected to positive parenting consider their parents as their role models. Thus, it is very easy to inculcate healthy lifestyle in kids. Help your kid get into fun games and physical activities during leisure time. Assist him or her to grow a taste for healthy food over junkies. Take your kid along with you for a morning walk. You will definitely be successful in your attempt.

Develop desire of learning

When you follow the technique of positive parenting, you’ll have greater chances of developing the desire of learning in your kid. So, instead of gluing on to the television during leisure, encourage your kid to read interesting books. You can also replace the stimulating video games with learning applications. You can further make your kid get into the habit of reading during bedtime. Over the time, these practices will grow your kid’s desire for learning.

Appreciate your kid

It is extremely important to appreciate your kid for something that is worth praising. This positive support of the parents induce a sense of positive feeling in kids and act as a reward for them. It further helps in developing and increasing their confidence. Not only academics, but also appreciating the extracurricular talent in your kids is equally important. It is an easy way to identify your kid’s genius too and boost it up further.

Set attainable goals

Positive parenting remarks that each child is special and bestowed with a definite skill. You cannot expect all the positive qualities of the world loaded in a single child. Therefore, setting goals for kids that might not be attainable, can get them frustrated and depressed. Instead, identify your kid’s special skills and then set an attainable goal. Once the kid achieves it, he or she will feel confident and will certainly look forward for more successful ventures.

Let your kid have some space

Parents who are too much involved with their kids, fail to realize that in an attempt to provide the best ambiance of growth, they are actually making their kids claustrophobic. Kids need natural environment to grow up. Let your kid have some space to breathe in and let him enjoy in his own way. Interfering constantly and unnecessarily is not a healthy way to interact with your kid. You must understand that there is a line of demarcation between the kid’s life and yours. Forcing yourself in the kid’s life is never a principle of positive parenting.

Have practical approach

Sometimes parents fail to realize the demands of different transitional phases in the life of a kid, from pre schooling stage to teenage. So, positive parenting advocates that you must have a logical and practical outlook about these transitional phases. But, it is also true that letting the string of parenting too loose is never the demand of positive parenting. Hence, being too conservative about your teen’s new love affair is wrong. Likewise, being liberal about your teen’s smoking habits is also illogical. Understand the dignity of parenthood and act accordingly. A casual discussion on topics like addiction, sex, relationships, STDs can be helpful for a teen kid. Chat sessions on importance of studying, obeying elders might also benefit a school goer.

Create logical answers

Kids often come up with questions that might be too embarrassing for you to answer. For instance, a school going toddler can inquire his parents about sex. Turning down these questions might make your kid too inquisitive. In such situations, wrong information from the peer group might prove detrimental too. Run your mind and search for the most dignified yet convincing answers to such questions, according to the age of your kid.
