Authoritative parenting: Good or bad?

Rearing a child by no means is an easy task. It requires patience and attention along with love and affection in right amount. Authoritative parenting is a parenting style that uncommonly combines the essence of parenting with certain restrictions. Nonetheless, this parenting nature has its own share of flip-flops like other parenting styles.

Authoritative parenting: The essence

Authoritative parenting is a unique style of parenting that encourages parents to support their children in a healthy yet restricted way. It clicks most of the parents and kids due to its supple nature as it is not just about harsh punishments, but supporting kids in a disciplined manner. This parenting approach has many advantages to count upon.

1. Better parenting

Many parents believe that authoritative parenting is a better form of parenting as it has specific confinement that is necessary for kids in their formative years to teach them between right and wrong. Authoritative parenting is a blend of firmness and understanding that tends to deal with complex issues in kids effectively. The best aspect of authoritative parenting is the fact that parents know how to manage their kids without being dictators. Hence, versatility makes this parenting approach better over others, considering the distinct behavioral pattern between today’s kids and their former generations.

2. Enhances safety in young adults

Authoritative parenting develops a sense of safety in kids which is an important facet of childhood. Kids, in fact, like to steer clear from troubles, since they have an apparent understanding of the code of conduct required in them. Moreover, kids have reduced behavioral problems that are quite evident through their childhood towards adolescence, due to adequate parental guidance. The fusion of firmness and mutual agreement makes it easy for children to understand their rights and limits at the same time. They can question their parents decisions as their parents are ready for negotiations. However, this agreement comes with certain moral restrictions as well, to ensure that kids do not appear rigid.

3. Creates sense of trust with freedom

The major advantage of authoritative parenting is the fact that it instills trust in kids along with sense of independence. Children are aware that their parents are always there to support them through their thick and thin. This trust comes with right parenting skills. Therefore, the parenting skills are a great attribute to the authoritative parenting style. Although, the determination of this parenting style brings alongside, a fair degree of expectations. It ensures that kids can create their personal choices as well.

Authoritative parenting: The criticism

Authoritative parenting might be one of the most recognized methods of nurturing up children, however, there are few disadvantages of this style of parenting. The authoritative approach could affect way of ‘managing’ kids in parents. So, it needs to be handled ingeniously, lest it might become extreme.

1. Rebellious kids

Authoritative parenting is about flexing children’s freedom and assisting them to be a responsible individual to create their choices in life. However, if parents become authoritative and do not support their kids to choose for themselves, it could turn kids into rebel, who would wish to go completely against their parents wishes. Parents tend to make their kids subject to relentless drills to train them for future. But they forget that a safe and supportative present will make an enduring future, hence, making kids rebels.

2. Creating rift between parents and children

In spite of numerous benefits of authoritative parenting, few parents do not approve of this style. They believe that constant conventions can create a rift between children and parents. The significance of authoritative parenting lies precisely at the time of drawing the strings. If parents become rigid towards their children, nothing can work to fix the split between them. Therefore, it is important to be assisting rather than dominating on kids to understand their requirements well.

3. Depression in kids

Authoritative parents have high expectations from their children. They regulate their lives according to certain rules. This approach could hamper a child’s mental as well as physical growth as an individual. Generally, parents forget the line that needs to be drawn in authoritative parenting, and believe in old beliefs to discipline their children. This nature of parenting can adversely affect the young minds.
