When do babies start talking? Why my baby is not talking when he is 10 months old?

My baby is 10 months old and till now he has not started talking. I am dying to listen the magical word mom from his mouth but in vain. I don’t have any elder with me to tell me when my baby will start talking. I have read an article in which it was written that babies start talking between 7 to 12 months. But as my baby has not started talking I am little tensed. Can anyone out there tell me when do babies start talking as I want to know from the mothers of the babies that when did their babies start talking?

Hi, First of all ten months old baby can not do the talking. Mostly it is babbling or just one or two words. Receptive language (what your baby understands) develops first before expressive language (which is what he expresses to you). Not all babies grow at the same pace but by 1 year they should start babbling.

Please check if the baby is responding to his name or responding to any sound or simple movement like "bye" etc. If there is no eye contact with you, or he stops babbling at around 6 months than please contact your baby's doctor.

From babbling they move towards words which could take another year. Even some healthy babies start making sentences after two to two and a half years of age. But they pickup very fast within two months as they start talking nonstop. Boys start talking a little late than girls.

The development of baby's talking skills are affected by their health, nutrition and even emotional factors. Social and emotional environment also play an important role. Some kids stop making progress after saying "mama" or "dad" mostly when they begin crawling or walking. Their communicating skills starts to disappear because they tend to concentrate only on one thing. It reappears only after 24-30 months of age.

Talk to the doctor during his next checkup. Good luck.
