What is a biopsy? Is a prostate biopsy really dangerous?

My father is 62 yrs old and he is suffering from prostate problems, and they plan on performing a biopsy. But I have read on various sites that the consequences are fatal. I need advice. I am his daughter and I just love him very much. I’m waiting desperately for your response. Kindly, reply as soon as possible. Thanks.

Hi there! I can very well understand how hard it is to deal with such a complex health disorder at this age. A colleague of mine discovered the same disease and was also very much confused regarding a prostate biopsy. She had long discussions with the expert doctor to get a clear picture of this test. My friend this test is done to gather samples of prostate tissue so that it can be well examined under the microscope. But, yes the procedure is painful. A thin needle is inserted through the rectum, or through the mid area of anus and scrotum. Some of the complication that may come in this test are pain when the injection is given, bloody semen; problem is urinating, or a bleeding rectum. Keep in mind that it is not a routine kind of test, so go for it only if it is highly recommended. Else you can go for other options on the recommendation of a doctor which includes imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans. Do consult an expert doctor before making the final decision. Take care.
