How To Make A Blanket?

What are the best ways to make a blanket? What are the different types of stitching and knitting methods in order to make your own blanket? Please help my mother and me to understand how to make a blanket? We are making the blanket for my cousin. She is very adorable and I want to what colors can we choose. What are the different types of blankets for babies?
