My child is constipated what should I do?

I would like your help. Please my child is constipated and it is causing him a lot of problems. My child is only 6 months old; I want to understand how a child can be constipated. Is it normal for such a young child to be constipated? What do I give the infant? Should I take him to the doctor? I gave him homeopathic tablets for constipation. It has been half a day, since his last pooping session. It normally does not take him so much time? He has had lunch and now I am just waiting, as I know his routine.

You can try the following things for your constipating kid. I am sure these things will help:-

1. Fiber- A diet low in fiber will definately play a role in constipation. The insoluble fiber- which passes through the body almost unchanged will give your stools a soft texture making them easier to pass. Foods which are high in insoluble fiber include- whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

2. Fluids- Make sure that you drink enough of fluids such as- water which will help some people having constipation. Fluids will make your bowel movements softer and easier to pass.

3. Stimulant Laxatives-Many herbal laxatives and the dieter's teas are called stimulant laxatives. These include some of the herbs such as- Cascara, sagrada, rhubarb, aloe, senna and buckthorn. Some of these herbs such as senna are approved as over-the-counter treatments for constipation. They are meant to be only the short-term treatments but in reality people can become dependent on them if they are using them for weeks.

4. Biofeedback- The biofeedback therapy can also help people having constipation resulting from the pelvic floor dysfunction which is a condition in which the pelvic floor muscles do not function properly. Although the biofeedback has only been explored as a treatment for this type of constipation relatively recently but the results are promising.

5. Probiotics- The probiotics, such as- lactobacillus acidophilus include live microbial organisms which are naturally present in your digestive tract. Some of the ways they are thought to promote your health include- suppressing the growth of potentially harmful bacteria and improving the immune function.

6. Magnesium- A deficiency of the mineral magnesium will contribute to constipation. Magnesium is found naturally in all foods such as- green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains and also in some of the supplements. It is needed for normal muscle function, including your intestinal muscles.
