Why my clear blue pregnancy test meter showed a false positive pregnancy?

I bought a clear blue pregnancy test meter last month and it showed a positive result. But, when I went for a pregnancy test it was negative. I want to know what could be the reason of false positive pregnancy test. Are these pregnancy test products fake? I followed the steps mentioned on the product to do my pregnancy test? Then what could be the reason of its failure? Also tell me how does these pregnancy test products work?

False positive pregnancy result means that there is pregnancy but actually there is no pregnancy. Sometimes you do get false positive result especially with home pregnancy kits. Here are some of the possible reasons for such results.

1. Over time: It is important to read the instructions properly before taking up a pregnancy test. Adhere to the time they give in the instruction. If they say the result has to be interpreted in 5 minutes then read it exactly on time. If you leave for a prolonged period say 15 to 20 minutes then there is a chance for you to get a false positive.

2. Chemical pregnancy: Lot of early especially first pregnancy end in miscarriage. Some of the pregnancy kit are very sensitive and can detect these.

3. Evaporation imprint or line: Sometimes when you leave it for long time, there will be evaporation marks which will get highlighted. Most of the test leave a faint mark as the sample crosses with test and make it look like positive result.

4. Hormonal interference: The pregnancy test is based on presence of certain hormones in the test sample. If the person takes drugs that contains these hormones, they will interfere with the test result. This will lead to false positive result. This is a common occurrence with patients under medication for luteal phase defects and fertility.

5. Some medical conditions like carcinomas can also give rise to false positive results.
