Consequences of getting protein in urine during pregnancy?

I went to the doctor for the usual check up and he has told me to come two more times in the same week. He has never said anything like that before. He has never had to see me more than once in a month. I heard him talking to someone about getting protein in urine during pregnancy. Could you please explain to me what that means and why does that happen. What is the harm in getting protein in your urine during pregnancy?

Often during pregnancy, the medical practitioner asks to have your urine examined. There may be a number of reasons for that. It may be to check in case you have protein in your urine. During pregnancy, if the results are positive it means that the kidneys have some problem. Protein in urine in the final stages of pregnancy indicates preeclampsia or an abnormally high blood pressure, which is also referred to as pregnancy related hypertension. The practitioner may also check the urine for ruling out any urinary tract infection.
Excess protein in ones urine may be a sign of a UTI, kidney problem, or certain other problems. The most frequent of these types of problems tends to be an infection of the kidneys. The most common of these types of problems is Preeclampsia which refers to a situation in which your blood pressure is extremely high during pregnancy. If one has preeclampsia, protein will be found in her urine. It is possible in case of preeclampsia to keep one from passing adequate blood to the placenta. There will also be retention of water.  Preeclampsia is also referred to as toxemia or pregnancy-induced hypertension. More severe symptoms of preeclampsia can consist of fatigue, severe abdominal pain, headaches and nausea, blurred vision, shortness of breath and irregular urination. So, it is always safe to follow the advice of the doctor.
