Break-up in teen dating can be a situation of emotional turmoil for them. Disappointment in early relationships can be very challenging and overwhelming. Someone breaking up with you can lead to embarrassment and loss of self esteem. Teens feel that now they will not be socially accepted. The condition remains the same when the teen has done the breaking up on their own. They feel an obligation to answer their peers and it becomes tough for them to feel good and behave normally. So, it is the time when your teen might need your support and attention. Mentioned below are some tips that can help you to deal with teen break-up.
1. Give them space
Being sad or feeling depressed for sometime is normal. So, parents should avoid interfering too much and refrain from showing fake gestures to cheer them up. Teens might not like this. But keeping a watchful lookout on the teen well being is important. If the teen is unable to overcome the depression for a long time then you need to take professional help.
2. Be a good listener
After the breakup, there is change in your teen’s daily routine. They have one less person to talk to. This is the time when they might need to talk to you. You should be a good listener and avoid being too judgmental. Keep the conversation focused on your teen and avoid sharing any personal anecdotes, until asked.
3. Ask them to follow appropriate break- up behavior
Your teen is emotionally imbalanced now, so do not suggest any inappropriate behavior. A wrong suggestion even to lighten up the mood can provoke the teen. He/she might do something which is inappropriate. Always mentor them to forgive and move on.
4. Make your teen socially active
This is the time when your teen most want to stay alone. But you should encourage him/her to become socially active. Remember not to impose your idea, speak in a subtle tone. Patience is the key here. Ask your teen to indulge in some activities with other friends. You can also make him/her join some hobby classes of their interest. Take them for shopping and buy them stuff of their choice.
