Palmer is a nurse, Lamaze instructor and breast-feeding consultant. After hearing a method for calming fussy babies on "The Happiest Baby on the Block," She read the book, watched the videos, and took a class. Now she's the Wichita area's only certified instructor for this new baby-soothing strategy.

'The Happiest Baby on the Block' is a noted book written by California pediatrician Harvey Karp. It talks about 'the 5 S's' or techniques to calm your baby. They are:

1. Swaddling- wrap the baby very tightly with the help if a baby blanket. This will prevent your kido from hitting itself.

2. Side or stomach lying- make sure that your baby sleep sideways as it is the most comfortable posture for them.

3. Shushing- shushing into the ears will stimulates in-utero sounds.

4. Swinging- holding baby's head in your palm gently jiggle your arm sideways. This will give soothing effect to your baby.

5. Sucking- offer the breast, bottle, pacifier or even your finger. Sucking is one of a baby's primary needs.

These 'techniques' are quite simple and very soon you'll realize that handling a fussy baby is not at all a difficult job but an interesting and enjoyable part of life.
