If you are the parent of a baby who is being fed on plastic bottles then you need to be warned that the plastic when being exposed to the liquid in the bottle can be potentially hazardous to your baby’s health. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has found in animal testing that Bisphenol A or BPA, a manmade chemical used in polycarbonate plastic that is used to make plastic baby bottle has hormone-like effects on the reproductive system. However, the Food and Drug Administration has assured that the current uses of BPA is within safe limits but a large number of American parents concerned about the possible ill effect of the chemical on the health of babies are switching over to the old fashioned glass baby bottles.

The traditional makers of glass baby bottles such as Babies “R” Us and Evenflo have found their sales figure escalating amidst fears of the side effects of the popular plastic bottles. Polycarbonate bottle manufacturers Dr. Brown’s and even new companies like BornFree have joined the ‘green bottle’ brigade in introducing their own versions of the glass baby bottles. The greatest problem with glass bottles that had made plastic baby bottles popular among parents is their vulnerability. To protect the glass bottle from breakage two Californian companies, Babylife and Silikids have introduced glass bottles covered in a protective silicone sleeve. With glass bottles being the safest option, at least for the time being, parents should remember that once babies could hold their own bottles and walk they should not be given a glass bottle to drink on their own. If continuous parental supervision is not possible then the toddler should be given BPA-free plastic sippy cups.
