Doctors prefer euthanasia to suffering among newborns

Charu Amar . Feb 9 2007

At times life brings such circumstances that doctors who are usually associated with bringing new life into this world and relieving pain and suffering have to act contrary to their usual self and act as a catalyst in nearing death for someone as innocent as babies.

Yes, they can. According to a recently survey conducted among doctors of America and New Zealand, half of them are prepared to go in for euthanasia for newborns suffering from life threatening disabilities. According to these doctors, by doing this they were only hastening the process of death there by reducing the extent of pain and suffering for the baby. As death is imminent in some babies, so they see no point in keeping the baby under pain, when they can relieve him with just a dose of medicine.

Yes, it does sound strange but it's true. You can read the excerpt of the interview with study's author, Dr Peter Barr, a senior physician at Westmead Children's Hospital in Sydney, here.
