Here are a few things that you can do to help your kid, if he also has this speech defect:

1. Convey that you're interested in understanding the content of speech, not the manner of delivery. Do not make a child repeat words until they are spoken fluently.

2. Do not finish a child's sentences. Do not rush him or her.

3. Set an example by speaking in a slow, unhurried way.

4. Maintain eye contact.

5. Consult a speech pathologist or other professional, especially if stuttering arises after age 5, if there is a family history of the problem or if it lasts longer than six months.
