Jaundice amongst newborns
Premature babies are more prone to medical problems than the normal ones. Now if you see white patches on your baby's eyes and skin, which turns to a slight yellow color after three days. Then don't panic, the condition is called Jaundice and it occurs when your baby's liver is not able to work fast in order to dispose of a pigment called bilirubin.
It usually clears up after a gap of few days and the most effective thing to combat it, is sunlight.
Sometimes when the level of bilirubin is too high in babies, then they are exposed to limited amount of ultra violet light in form of phototherapy. It helps in breaking down of the pigment levels in the skin.
The entire process has to be carried out in the hospitals, where your baby is placed in special crib. The treatment is very effective.
