After cot deaths it is the sofa death that is taking a toll on the lives of a large number of babies. Yes, babies dying while sleeping with a parent in a sofa has risen by 400 percent, researchers at Royal Hospital for Children in Bristol, England said.

No doubts that campaigns against SIDS have shown their impact to a great extent with cot deaths going down by nearly 50%, but now it is the sofa deaths. Some of the potential causes for babies dying in beds have been traced to lying the infant face-down, parental smoking and old mattresses which may contain bacteria.
The study also revealed that apart from a considerable rise in sofa deaths SIDS is more common now in deprived families. The reason for this increase is the fact that most of the poor mothers have the habit of smoking, which indirectly adds on into the risk of SIDS or Cot deaths.
Thus, a two way attempt is needed, that may educate mothers about the potential risks of sleeping with the baby on one hand and on the other it may issue guidelines to socially deprived poverty stricken mothers.
