If you're like most women, the pain of childbirth is one of the things you worry about having a baby. This is quite understandable because, for most women, childbirth is painful.

Although it is possible to give birth with little pain, it is best to plan some strategies for coping. Mitigate concerns about pain is one of the best ways to ensure that you can handle it when the time comes.

The pain of childbirth is due mainly to the uterine muscle contractions and, to some extent, the pressure of the baby on the cervix. This pain manifests itself as cramping in the abdomen, groin and back, tired and achy. Some women also experience pain in their sides and thighs.

Another cause of pain during childbirth is the pressure of the baby's head on the bladder and intestines, and dilation of the birth canal and vagina.

Although often regarded as the birth is one of the most painful episodes of human experience, the pain varies greatly from woman to woman and pregnancy to pregnancy. Women experience labor pain differently-some are similar to menstrual cramps, others, severe pressure, and other waves of excruciating pain that resemble cramps accompanying diarrhea. In addition, new mothers tend to attribute a higher intensity of pain than ones who have already had children.
