Importance of sterilizing baby bottles?

Could someone please let me know as soon as possible if it is really necessary to sterilize a babies bottle. My cousin is about to give birth in about a few days. i know a mother to be should always know everything about baby care. But we have just been so busy, and i need to know what is the best way of sterilizing baby bottles and how often must it be done. It is it really important enough to consider doing it as a regular task. She is going to be a first born. So please help!!
