Induced Lactation Is it a possibility?

I have just entered fatherhood and want to help my wife as she has gone through a lots of pain in delivering our baby. I have read a lot about post partum care but want to know something about Induce Lactation as the doctors says mother’s milk is the best thing that we can provide to our baby. As my wife is busy with the baby most of the time I would want to kow about it and want to explain her about it. Can you please help me out in knowing what exactly Induce Lactation is and how does it help the baby?

Well, it’s true that mother’s milk is the best for a baby, but today many couples are going for Induced lactation. It is also known as "adoptive breastfeeding" and refers to the ability for a woman to breastfeed without going through a pregnancy. You may begin with nipple stimulation — ideally, pumping both breasts with a hospital-grade electric breast pump every three hours around the clock, beginning about two months before you expect to begin breast-feeding. This stimulation encourages the production and release of the hormone prolactin. No drugs have been specifically approved to induce lactation, however, and potential side effects may be a concern. Typically, hormone therapy for induced lactation is discontinued shortly before breast-feeding begins. At that point, the baby's suckling is thought to stimulate and maintain milk production. Your health care provider may recommend continued pumping to further stimulate milk production. To learn more about induced lactation and how to increase chances of successful breast-feeding; you can contact a lactation consultant at a local hospital nearby you.
