Moth balls danger for kids?

Hi I am a single father of a 9 months old child. My kid has just started crawling and it is quit difficult for me to handle him as he is a very restless child. At times I cannot pay attention to what he is picking up and putting in his mouth. Therefore I am really scared about the moth balls kept in the house, is it fatal to even sniff it for longer period? I want to know the moth balls danger and is it safe to keep it at home when you have a child?

The primary ingredient in mothballs is para dichloro benzene, which isn't as toxic as it's predecessor naphthalene, but still dangerous. Mothballs consist of 100% Naphthalene or a form of Benzene. Inhalation of vapors causes headaches, respiratory distress, eye irritation and many other symptoms. Ingestion causes toxic poisoning leading to liver damage, respiratory failure, seizures, heart arrhythmia, and the possibility of death. It's important to keep mothballs away from children to prevent a tragedy. The scent from the mothballs creates irritation to the eyes, throat and nose. It also causes nausea and vomiting when there's constant exposure to the fumes. Beware of other types of mothball products, which use the same ingredients. These go under names like crystals and cakes and are equally as enticing to children. Keep anything that has the ingredients of mothballs away from children, especially something that looks like a large cookie. Keep your baby safe, because prevention is always better then cure.
