parents as teachers good for children?

hi there! guys i live in new york and commute daily to new jersey and I'm a teacher there. it wasn't a problem for my 13 year old son in the beginning but now that he is growing and adding more days to himself, he has stopped talking to him. i know i was not paying attention to him and it was the nanny who took care of him. is there a problem of parents being teachers??

The problem probably lies in the way of acting a teacher over being a parent. It is relatively easier to monitor a young child but as the child grows, demands become versatile, and so there have to be the ways of dealing them. Adolescence is a transitional stage and many behavioral changes can be but natural.  As a responsible parent, you would certainly like to monitor your son's education and academics. The other partner can be an asset here. But nonetheless, customization is the thumb rule while dealing with children.

If your child is not comfortable in your indulging in his teaching/academics, it is recommended to find alternatives. You can take the assistance of his school teacher (particularly the one he is the closest and the most comfortable with). As a teacher, you may be having a wide circle of yours, wherein you can find one mentor who suits him academically and otherwise. This can give you the flexibility of monitoring your son's performance indirectly.

Children can be more comfortable and frank with their teachers than parents. Try to understand your son’s psychology by talking to him often (you can also consult his friends, but in a limited way). It would be bad to expect a meek submission of your son to your authority. Although adolescents are immature and need parental guidance, they dislike being treated as kids. Furthermore, the teenage males can be more forceful compared to their relatively fragile female counterparts. Tune in your psychology to his and then shape a solution.
