Fortunately, shingles in pregnancy is rare. And, for most women who develop shingles during pregnancy, the prognosis is good. Shingles occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox starts up again in your body. After you get better from chickenpox, the virus "sleeps" in your nerve roots. You can't catch shingles from someone else who has shingles. But a person with a shingles rash can spread chickenpox to another person who hasn't had chickenpox and who hasn't gotten the chickenpox vaccine. Early symptoms of shingles include burning or shooting pain and itching, generally on one side of the body or face. For some people, the pain is severe. It may be accompanied by fever, chills, nausea, diarrhea and difficulty urinating. The treatments for this type of infection are similar for women who are pregnant and those who are not. The main treatments for shingles include antiviral medications. These medicines are all pregnancy Category B medicines, meaning that they appear to be safe during pregnancy. In addition to antiviral drugs, pain medicines are also frequently used to treat shingles. The specific pain medicine your healthcare provider recommends will depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy.Good home care can help you feel better faster. Take care of any skin sores, and keep them clean.
