We often come across infants with unusual abilities. Like I wonder what makes kids different from each other when I see kids picking up walking and speaking basic words before they turn one-year-old. On the other side, I also know kids who have turned two, but cannot speak a word or two. But I was overwhelmed seeing 17-month-old Elizabeth as she read English words in the video. Well the latest research by scientists from University of Paris has confirmed that infants pick up learning numbers and quantities much before they learn speaking. Isn’t it amazing!
According to the study if a baby is shown five balls, he will not be able to count and tell its number, as he hasn’t been taught the numerical scale. However if a ball is added or removed from these five balls the baby will immediately figure out the change. Also if we add another object like a teddy bear to the collection of five balls, the baby doesn’t consider it an addition to five balls. Rather he perceives this newly added teddy bear as a different object.
The conclusion of this study was reached by an analysis of the neuronal activity of babies to study their brains .The research conducted by scientists has been published on the website of Pubic Library of Science.
I hope this new study will help parents to understand and bring up their kids better who till now believed that babies learn speech before they learn numbers.
