How to teach your child tolerance

Teach Tolerance to your child

Parenting is very essential especially when your kid is in the growing years. Among the various disciplines that needs to be taught, teaching him or her how to be tolerant is extremely important. Tolerance is the human attribute that makes people considerate about others views and beliefs. In cases, when a situation does not remain in one’s favor, a tolerant human being never shows his or her disagreement or disapproval in an agitated manner. Instead the individual adapts to moderate means to exhibit disagreement. This attribute is considered vital as it shapes the character of a human being and makes him or her social. The person gets acceptance in an association and is also able to live and cope up in a situation which has diversities.

Here are a few tips you can use to teach your kid to be tolerant while he or he is still growing up:

Encourage the sense of tolerance in kids

Some parents are quite liberal about their views on diversity and intermingling of cultures. Thus, the kids of such parents do not face much difficulty in learning how to be tolerant. Moreover, the exposure of kids to people to diverse cultures is more varied as compared to that of the parents. Thus, while making friends they do not mind at all if the other person is of a same culture or a different culture. The parents must always encourage this spirit in their kids.

Teach your kid to be tolerant

While you might be liberal but your spouse might be conservative in his ideologies. Even if both of you are liberal, a member of your extended family may be conservative. This might create a negative impact in the mind of your child. You must be extremely tactical in dealing with the situation. Teach your kid logically what is wrong and what is right. Show him or her the right direction to approach in life, so that the kid gets much better social acceptance.

Be a role model

To instill the ideals you prefer in your kid, you must be their role model. This way your child would not be influenced by others whose ideologies you do not approve of. Being a role model means you need to become your child’s best friend. But at the same time, you must have a thin line of guardianship over your child so that he or she obeys to you willingly. Moreover, tolerance must reflect in your personal attitude too, like valuing differences, respecting and considering the views and beliefs of others, etc.

Understanding the concept of tolerance

Before starting off with the teaching session of tolerance, you need to question yourself what tolerance means and whether you have all the attributes needed to be tolerant. Tolerance does not only focus towards a respectful attitude towards the people outside your home. You need to be tolerant in your home too. There might be difference of opinion in your family too. It is crucial to be tolerant in such situations too by holding back your aggression. You must be able to respect the view of the other person you have entered, into consideration too and have a restrained attitude in expressing your own views. While communicating with people outside your family you must also not be prejudiced or should also not hurt people on sentimental grounds.
