Toy Swords for a 12 year old!

My child wanted to know where he can get toy swords from. He wants toy swords for his birthday, something really big and he wants it to be not made of plastic, but I would not allow it. He is 12 years old, what toy swords can you suggest for a 12 year old. He keeps complaining he is not a kid any more. I do not even know if there are swords which are not made in plastic. If there are could you please tell me where I could find them. I stay in Los Angeles. Is it safe to be playing with non plastic swords, if there are any?

It has usually been found that girls have a natural tendency to play with dolls. They love to play with Barbie dolls, its dresses, houses etc. whereas boys love to play with guns, swords, camps, tents and so on. Toy guns or swords are just for amusement. Even if you don’t give your son the sword he wants, he is bound to get a substitute, may be a scale or a stick and hold it in air in order to play the pirate. You will be eager to buy your child a water gun then why not a plastic sword to play with. Children love to play pirates during Halloween, raise a sword and shout but obviously they don’t go around and hurt people. Good counseling goes a long way when children are given to play with such play items. One is supposed to teach the child the correct way to play with the toys. Even if you do not allow your child not to play with a plastic sword, he will feel dejected and that inner urge to play with a sword will remain and can have a cathartic effect. You can shape an old plastic scale and make the head blunt so that it doesn’t really hurt. There are certain stores which sell safe toys for children. Many children grow up in families who are in the defense forces and see armors; they do not necessarily go on to become gangsters. But at the end of the day it is your child and your counseling can help a lot.
