The disease, Down syndrome is caused by an abnormality in chromosomal condition in human body. It is caused by the presence of all or part  of an extra no21 chromosome in all human race. It was first detected in 1866 by a British doctor named John L Down and therefore, was named after him. In this disease, mostly seen in Britain, before the birth of a child it is particularly impossible to detect a Down syndrome. But when an expecting mother is examined for complications during pregnancy certain type of genetic tests like amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling(CVS), parcutaneous umbilical cord blood sampling(PUBS) which are mostly done wherever there is previous records of Down syndrome in the family. Though, Down syndrome is a dreaded disease causing various types of problems to a child, it is quite rare (1 in 700/800 women it is seen), The children born with Down syndrome usually have several abnormal physical features like abnormally small chin, eyes with Mongoloid skin fold, poor muscle construction, flat nasal bridge, protruding tongue, a flat -broad face where the neck is short, etc. which are mostly common among the patients of this disease. I think, for this reason the pictures you have seen seemed to be quite same to you. This disease has no such specific cure or medicine. Sometimes, the abnormal facial or physical features are corrected by cosmetic surgery. As this disease brings several deformities like difficulties in hearing, speech, lack of normal development of brain as well as heart disease, these all are taken care off separately.
